Four high school soccer teams from the San Diego Section won Southern California Regional first-round games Tuesday, advancing to the semifinals.
The Torrey Pines boys led the dramatics with a shootout win over visiting Moreno Valley Valley View in Division I. After a 2-2 tie in regulation and overtime, the Falcons prevailed 4-2 on penalty kicks.
Torrey Pines goalkeeper Dean Meltz made two straight saves to seal the win. Brett Sampiere scored the winning PK for the Falcons, who on Saturday defeated San Pasqual on penalty kicks to win the section championship.
Torrey Pines (21-5-3) will host Paramount (23-4-3) in the semifinals Thursday.
Also in Division I boys, La Costa Canyon dropped a 2-1 decision to top-seeded Long Beach Millikan.
St. Augustine advanced with a 5-1 win over Thermal Desert Mirage in Division II. Kostas Kotselas led the Saints with two goals.
St. Augustine (17-5-4) will travel to Santa Ana Valley (18-8-2) for a semifinal game Thursday.
The Carlsbad girls, seeded No. 1 in Division I, continued their roll with a 1-0 triumph over visiting Downey. Christina Nixon scored the Lancers’ goal.
In the semifinals, Carlsbad (18-4-7) will host Rancho Cucamonga Los Osos (25-0-3), which registered a 2-1 first-round win over La Costa Canyon on Tuesday.
Cathedral Catholic recorded a 3-0 win over visiting Redlands Citrus Valley in Division II.
Kelsey Irwin scored two goals and Kelly Bieraugel scored once for the Dons. Goalkeeper Lizzie Stabile logged the shutout.
In Thursday’s semifinals, Cathedral (17-6-5) will host La Puente Bishop Amat (25-4-4), which defeated Coronado 2-1 in a first-round game Tuesday.
Boys and girls championships in Division I and Division II will be Saturday at Warren High in Downey."
