Coach John Burson's San Pasqual team is ranked No. 2 in the San Diego Section.
San Diego Southwest, which reached the Division III semifinals last season, looms as a title contender under new coach Giovanni Medina, who succeeds his brother, Guillermo. The Raiders bank on fourth-year varsity members Luis Martinez, Carlos Ramirez and Victor Campos.
Torrey in transition
Defending Division I champion Torrey Pines regroups following the graduation of 15 players. Still, the Falcons remain a Top 10 team with hopes of their fourth final and third title in five years behind seniors Sam Horton, JT Esquivel and Jacques Bialotsky.
Island of strength
The outlook is as bright as an island sunrise for Coronado in its quest for a three-peat Division IV title with nine returning starters and 13 seniors. All-section midfielder Andrew Orozco spearheads the Islanders along fellow seniors Riley Peterson and Nathan Anderson.
What’s next for Hilltop? The highly regarded Lancers were disappointed in each of the last two Division II finals. They can start with defense since 6-foot-4 Adrian Zendejas returns in goal. A section crown would be their first in 20 years.
San Pasqual has shown staying power as a top team since taking the 2010 Division I crown. A year ago, the Eagles again reached the final, only to fall on penalty kicks. Senior midfielder Zac Salado leads the way, supported by Jose Olguin and Eric Ledesma.
