Sacramento Sheldon's Dakarai Allen (shown earlier in the tournament) scored 21 points against St. Augustine on Saturday night.
San Diego State-bound Dakarai Allen put on a dazzling show Saturday night, leading Sacramento Sheldon to a 64-47 win over St. Augustine in the National Division championship game of the 23rd annual Under Armour Torrey Pines Holiday Classic.
The 6-foot-6 Allen, the division’s MVP, finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and a blocked shot.
He had at least five other passes clang off the hands or chests of teammates as SDSU basketball coach Steve Fisher looked on.
“He’s really good,” Saints coach Mike Haupt said of Allen. “But they have a lot of good players and a really good team.”
Allen played most of the night with a patched-up cut above his right eye as he spent half his time running to the trainer’s table for treatment.
D’Erryl Williams of Sheldon (7-3), another SDSU-bound player, finished with nine points as he was handicapped by foul trouble.
Brynton Lemar, who has signed with UC Davis, led No. 5-ranked St. Augustine (8-2) with 19 points, 15 in the first half. He was an all-tournament selection. Trey Kell added 10 points for the Saints.
“We played four great teams in this tournament, played state champions on back-to-back nights and beat one (edging Richmond Salesian in Friday’s semis), so I’m not disappointed,” Haupt said.
“This was a great learning experience, and we’ll be better for it.”
St. Augustine plays at archrival Cathedral Catholic on Jan. 5.
