Katherine Day’s brace turned her into a champion and simultaneously etched her name into the San Diego CIF record books at Mesa College Saturday night.
“We have a play where we play the ball down the right side,” said Christian coach Joel Waymire. “Brooke was open and she crossed it inside the box. Katherine finished it like she has done all year.”
The senior forward’s goal — her 61st of the season — sealed the CIF Division V championship for the top-seeded Patriots (22-5-2) as they defeated the two-seeded Horizon Panthers 2-1. She broke Carmel Murphy’s 23-year old record for most goals in a single season with her two strikes.
“I never worried about breaking records or anything,” Way said. “My focus from day one was to help my teammates win the title.”
It’s eluded the Patriots the past two seasons despite back-to-back appearances in the championship round — thanks to defending champion Horizon (16-8-2). However, Saturday night, Christian got the last laugh.
Added Waymire: “The girls relied on each other and fortunately we were able to maintain our game plan throughout and take control.”
