It nearly ended in identical fashion.
Two years ago, Cathedral Catholic faltered in a penalty-kick shootout against eventual San Diego Section Division III champion La Jolla. Saturday, here the Dons were again — trailing 3-1 in PKs to the same team.
A bit of déjà vu for Dawn Lee.
“I saw it all flash before me again,” the Cathedral coach said.
The second-seeded Vikings (13-5-3), however, missed their next attempt. Given new life, the No. 1 Dons (23-3-4) nailed their final four kicks to claim the crown 4-3 after a 1-1 draw.
“I was really nervous,” said senior Courtney Brown, who sealed the victory. “But I was the sixth kicker and six is my lucky number. I approached it like practice.”
Sophomore Shelby Cormier connected on a set-piece header to provide Cathedral Catholic with a first-half lead. Rachel Caroll’s curling corner kick was the equalizer.
Said Lee: “After the kick rolled into the net and we won, I told both (La Jolla) coaches — because we’re such good friends — that we’re 1-1 now. You got the first match, we got the second.”
