Bishop’s used the 120-yard length of the Del Norte High pitch in the last minute of the first half to create the momentum that led to its 11th San Diego Section Division IV soccer championship.
Geny Decker and Olivia Erlbeck scored in the 40th and 43rd minutes, respectively, to rally the top-seeded Knights to a 2-1 triumph over No. 3 Francis Parker.
Decker, carrying the ball 60 yards up the left side on a breakaway, scored her 38th goal moments after goalkeeper Coral Hasley slid to make a reaction save with her feet on the mouth of the goal.
“I don’t normally make saves like that. It was just instinct,” Hasley said. “It’s an amazing feeling to beat them. I wanted Parker.”
Added Decker: “All day, it was banter between us across social media. After that goal, I got chills. It was just one of those unexplainable feelings. I’m shaking right now.”
The sequence nullified Elisa Martinez’s fifth-minute goal for the Lancers (17-8).
The Knights (18-2-1) have won their last eight titles at Parker’s expense, with the Coastal League co-champions playing each other for the championship 10 times since 1991.
“It’s a tough memory,” Lancers coach Marc Thiebach said. “Giving up a goal like that is huge. With a 2-0 lead, we would really have stood a good chance of closing it out.”
