Cal Lutheran High's dream boys basketball season came to an end late Saturday night, as the C-Hawks fell against Los Angeles Ribet Academy, 80-54, in a CIF Southern California Division V regional quarterfinal at Rosemead Don Bosco Tech High.
The C-Hawks (21-5), the division's No. 10 seed, trailed the Fighting Frogs (22-9) by double digits by the end of the first quarter and never recovered. Cal Lutheran struggled to contain the much taller Frogs, including 6-foot, 10-inch sophomore center Idrissa Diallo.
Junior Ryan Smith led Cal Lutheran with 14 points and seven rebounds. Senior guard Robert Riesenberg added 11 points. Cal Lutheran trailed 38-19 at the half and cut the deficit to 14 points in the third quarter before the Frogs salted the game away with a 12-0 run.
The loss ended a season in which the C-Hawks accomplished a number of benchmarks, including an Arrowhead League championship, a 20-win season, and an appearance in the Southern Section finals, which they lost last week to La Canada Renaissance Academy.
"After the game, we tried to focus on the positives and the good memories we created," Cal Lutheran coach Dave Peter said. "Obviously, we would like to get that championship game back and play it the way we know we could have."
