CARLSBAD Big runs at the start of the game and to open the second half propelled the La Costa Canyon High girls to a convincing 66-43 win over La Verne Bonita on Wednesday in the first round of the Southern California Regional playoffs.
For the Mavericks, the San Diego Section Division II champions, this was their first girls state playoff victory.
“I told the girls to come out with energy,” said LCC coach Mario Flores. “I wanted to get the early lead. When we do it, it usually works out well.”
The Mavericks (31-2), who will play a quarterfinal home game Saturday, jumped to a 14-1 lead with Esther Wofford and Taylor Pierce each scoring five. The Mavericks led 35-23 at the break.
A 13-4 run to open the second half, fueled by Savannah Irwin, Matti Haglund and Rachel Dumiak, pushed the advantage to 21 and put an end to Bonita’s season at 25-7.
“Our big three (Irwin, Wofford and Pierce) play well almost every night,” Flores said. “Every game, I ask someone else to step up. Tonight it was Rachel Dumiak.”
Irwin, the 6-foot-5 dominant presence in the middle, had 19 points and 16 rebounds for the Mavericks. Pierce, a sophomore guard, finished with 13 points and a career high 16 rebounds. Wofford added 10 points.
Dumiak, also a sophomore, had 12 points, nine rebounds and blocked a pair of shots.
