A season after losing the San Diego Section Division II softball title game, Bonita Vista is finally the team celebrating with the championship plaque.
Behind the strong pitching of senior Jennifer Hartman, the Barons defeated Rancho Bernardo 4-2 Saturday to win the Division II crown at UC San Diego.
“It feels great,” Bonita Vista coach John Carlson said.
Hartman threw a complete game and allowed just five hits in the final game of her stellar high school career.
Rancho Bernardo jumped on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning when sophomore pitcher Sara White hit a two-run home run to left. That would be the only offense the Broncos would muster.
The Barons answered back in the top of the fourth when sophomore right fielder Alex Vargas hit a three-run home run for 3-2 lead.
“We definitely showed we can bounce back,” Carlson said. “We haven’t trailed much, so it was different being the team that comes back.”
These teams met Thursday in the fourth round of the playoffs with Bonita Vista winning 5-1. The familiarity was not a disadvantage for Hartman, who also pitched in the fourth-round game.
“It is tough to beat a team two times in a row,” Hartman said. “They knew how I throw, but we were able to come out on top. I couldn’t ask for a better way to go out.”
