University City coach Mike Roberts was so moved by his team’s three-peat softball championship that he joined his players for the first time in a postgame version of their traditional “Boom, Chica, Boom, Boom” cheer.
Roberts thus fulfilled a midseason promise to the top-seeded Centurions. They clinched the deal by topping Ramona 12-2 in a San Diego Section Division III final that was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule at UCSD on Saturday.
University City (25-3) greeted the No.?4 Bulldogs (17-15) in their first finals appearance by unleashing a 15-hit attack, spearheaded by seniors Alex Caniglia with three hits and two RBI and Jillian Drogin with three hits and an RBI.
“We came so pumped up for this game,” Caniglia said. “It’s so awesome to win three.”
Amanda Hansen pitched a three-hitter in closing her high school career along with six other senior teammates. Nine players contributed throughout the run of three titles.
“We’ve had some great players,” said Roberts. “When someone leaves, new ones step up.”
