For an example of how to stage a seventh-inning comeback for the title, Mater Dei Catholic only had to look at how it captured the Division IV softball crown last season.
The Crusaders performed an encore in this year’s San Diego Section final as they rallied for five runs in the seventh to overcome previously unbeaten Madison 8-6 on Saturday at UCSD.
Sophomore Skania Lemus, who earlier had a two-run double, delivered an RBI single to ignite the decisive rally for third-seeded Mater Dei (19-13).
“We said, ‘We can do it again,’?” Lemus said. “We’ve worked so hard. We all just got together like sisters and pulled through.”
Mikayla Conlin added two doubles and two RBI for the Crusaders. The victory over No.?1 Madison (28-1) culminated a season dedicated to the memory of assistant coach Perry Burgess, who died of a heart attack this year.
“Our girls have been through a lot this season,” Mater Dei coach Mike Centrullo said. “Through it all, they just kept coming back.”
