Key players, scouting report, facts & figures

Last year: 12-1

Coach: John Carroll, 24th year

League: Avocado West

Division: Open

Key players: Thai Cottrell (Slot-RB), Jace Whittaker (Slot-DB), Micah Holder (WR), Alijah Holder (DB), T.K. Dodds (WR-DB), Andres Gonzalez (OL-DL), Tony Pineda (OL-DL), Isaac Dixon (DL), Tommy Woo (DL), Josh Bernard (RB-LB), Brandon Badillo (OL-DL).

Scouting report: No team in the county has better returning skill players. Whittaker, who has committed to Arizona, had 865 all-purpose yards last season — 130 rushing, 497 receiving and 238 on returns. Cottrell, who has committed to San Jose State, had 1,867 total yards — 796 rushing, 695 receiving and 376 on returns. Micah Holder, who has committed to San Diego State, had 42 catches for 825 yards and 11 TDs. Dodds had 24 catches for 406 yards. Bernard rushed 54 times for 164 yards. Alijah Holder, who some say is one of the best cornerbacks in the country, has committed to Stanford. The Pirates also return three starting offensive linemen and two starters on the defensive line. Plus, the linebackers should be solid. The question mark is at quarterback. Matt Romero, a junior off the JV team, is the starter, with strong-armed sophomore left-hander Dakota Miller, a transfer from Arizona, in the wings. Josh Harris, who transferred from Helix, also might end up in the QB mix. The Pirates do lack depth, so avoiding injuries will be a key to the season.
