Scouting report: The rebuilding process continues for a team that played in the San Diego Section Division I championship game in 2011, and the sophomore and junior classes are the keys to success. Athletic QB Lemon-Rodriguez is the biggest key. He played in seven games for the Panthers last season, throwing for 264 yards. The running game will be by committee, with Todd Williams, Flores and Anthony Kuchinski leading the way. Vista scored just 57 points last season, and 27 of them were in a loss to Escondido. The team was shut out five times, won one game by forfeit, and bested Torrey Pines 2-0 on a safety. On defense, Faatuiese, the top tackler as a sophomore last year, is the leader along with Lasua and Flores. The Vista defense allowed 277 points last season, with seven teams scoring 35 or more points. The Panthers have 16 returning lettermen but face a schedule that includes five San Diego Section Open Division teams: Eastlake, Steele Canyon, Torrey Pines, Oceanside and La Costa Canyon.
