Last year: 8-4
Coach: Mike Woodward, 6th year
Key players: Nate Ketteringham (QB), Keanu Alfaro (RB), Brock Rasor (WR), Michael Yitayew (WR), Raymond Zhang (OL), Nick Brown (OL-LB), Jack Overbey (OL), Jake Hanson (DE), Connor Larrick (TE-LB), Danny Athans (DB), Michael Shadown (DB), Royce Muniz (TE-LB).
Scouting report: A second-team all-league pick as a sophomore last year, Ketteringham is the key to the season. He threw for more than 1,300 yards last year and completed 59 percent of his passes on a team that averaged 22.5 points a game. Mobile and strong-armed, the 6-foot-4 passer is already getting looks from Division I colleges. He’ll run an up-tempo offense that, Woodward said, “hopefully will be faster than any team you’ve ever seen in San Diego.” Woodward and his staff have based the offense on Oregon’s fast-tempo attack. On defense, the Wolverines have installed San Diego State’s aggressive 3-3-5. With smaller, quicker athletes, Woodward believes that the scheme fits his team better, allowing the best 11 players to get on the field. The Wolverines return seven starters — five on offense, two on defense.
