League: Grossmont Hills
Key players: Jalen Davis (DB-slot), Forrest Hanlon (DL-LB), Rueben Leseau (LB), Jabrion Burnside (RB-LB), Mike Fajardo (OL-DL), Aaron Hardin (WR-DB), Jaylon Kuykendall (OL-DL), Jalen Wyatt (OL-DL), Christian Chavez (OL-DL).
Scouting report: The Highlanders need to find a new quarterback after 2012 starter Josh Harris transferred to Oceanside. Sophomore Michael Austin appears to be the front-runner. Helix has won 15 straight league games. Hardin and Davis are experienced pass-catchers. Helix is lacking a proven running back, but there are plenty of horses in the stable. Burnside is a power runner whom the Highlanders will count on heavily. Jalen Carter, Derrick Carter, Adrian Petty and Jihad Woods lack experience but should challenge for playing time. Helix should be steady in the trenches, though the front line features many new faces. Wyatt (6-3, 250) figures to be a two-way starter for the Highlanders, who won a state bowl game in 2011. Hanlon, who earned all-league honors as a freshman offensive lineman, will spread his talents as a defensive end and linebacker. Helix will look for major contributions from Kuykendall (6-1, 295), a two-way lineman. Dashawn Keirsey should make an impact in the secondary and also could play some at quarterback.
