Last year: 7-5
Coach: Tay Sneddon, 3rd year
League: Grossmont Hills
Key players: D.J. Lewis (WR-DB), Sean Olszanowski (DL), Matt Lipscomb (DL-OL), Cody Thompson (OL), Noah Ylagan (DB-RB). Peanut Herrada (WR-FS), Ryden Kerr (MLB), Johnny Espinosa (SS), Noah Ortiz (OLB-TE), Danny McManus (WR-DB-K).
Scouting report: Sneddon has never believed West Hills to be playing over its head in the Grossmont Hills League, and so far that has proved true. The Wolf Pack return 13 starters from last year’s 7-5 team, which positions West Hills as a dark horse in this year’s league race. Lewis, a versatile three-sport letterman who also excels in baseball and basketball, is one of the team leaders. Not only did he return kicks and catch passes, he also made three interceptions — one for a touchdown. Herrada is certain to make an impact on both sides of the line of scrimmage. “We are very athletic this year,” Sneddon said. “We lost some size to graduation, but we have a lot coming back. We had a very successful JV team last year, and many of those kids will fill the voids.” West Hills’ defense is solid, built around Olszanowski, Lipscomb and Kerr. Ylagan and McManus, who also contributed 59 points as a kicker, will help bolster the attack. Inside linebacker Austin Arnold and wide receiver Raphy Carr could emerge for the Wolf Pack.
