Key players, scouting report, facts & figures

Last year: 8-4

Coach: Tyler Arciaga, 1st year

League: Metro South Bay

Division: II

Key players: Jimmie Hill (RB-DB), Andres Preciado (OL), Israel Montgomery (OL), Andrew Robinson (OL), Brandon Scales (WR-DB), Mike Cena (WR), Colt Meling (LB), Pano Cavaco (WR), Alejandro Akerlundh (LB).

Scouting report: The big news at Mar Vista is that with Arciaga arriving from San Ysidro, the run-based double-wing offense that has been so successful for the Mariners in recent years will be replaced by a more balanced offense. Arciaga’s first job will be to find a throwing quarterback because he sure doesn’t have to worry about running backs with Hill returning after gaining 847 yards and scoring four times last season. The line is also well-stocked with Preciado (6-5, 240), Robinson (6-4, 235) and Montgomery (6-2, 245) all returning and expected to play both ways. Wide receivers like Scales, Cena and Cavaco — all among 12 returning starters — will have an opportunity to showcase their skills a little more. On defense the linebacking crew, led by Meling, is solid but lacks depth. A solid nonleague schedule will either toughen or beat up the Mariners. Playing in Division II for the postseason will be interesting should Mar Vista get that far.
