Key players: Robby Weissenfels (QB), Jared Meoni (OL), Zack Kozlik (RB), Josh East (LB), Austin Rumbo (WR), Gabe Granados (DB), Francisco Jimenez (OL), Michael Dunphey (OL), Jacob Wink (OL), Bronson Meskimen (OL).
Scouting report: If the Islanders follow their uncanny pattern of the past, they will be highly successful. For some time, Coronado has followed a down year with a good one, and with a core of eight starters and 20 veteran players returning, this looks like a group that could contend. Weissenfels, the team’s No. 2 rusher a year ago, moves to quarterback, which makes him a serious double threat. If that doesn’t work, last year’s starter, Jordan Naramore, also returns. The No. 3 rusher, Matt Halverson, is back but will battle Kozlik for playing time. Coronado appears to be deepest on the line, with Meoni, Jimenez, Dunphey and Meskimen leading the way. The team features eight players who weigh at least 205 pounds and who gained varsity experience a year ago; seven of them started at one time or another. The linebacking crew appears solid as well with East and Kyle Dodson leading the way. As usual at the small-enrollment school, the Islanders must avoid key injuries. The schedule is friendly with five straight home games.
