Scouting report: Remember last year, when the Saints ended up using four freshmen and five sophomores? They’re a year older now, and if skill-position players can win a title, the Saints are poised to do so. Hudson completed 71 percent of his passes (117-of-165) for 1,567 yards and 19 TDs last year. Preston rushed for 1,534 yards and scored 14 TDs as a freshman, and Herburger was No. 2 with 504. Francoise Sims III scored 10 TDs as a freshman. Harris and Sanchez have good hands. With all that talent, the focus shifts to the line, where only Habib (6-4, 265) started last year. But Chris Gessel (6-3, 260), Mike Alves (6-4, 310), Dan Ramirez (5-10, 220) and Tom Browne (6-4, 245) played extensive minutes. On defense, Buncom has received an offer from the University of Washington, Seau (6-1, 210) played valuable minutes as a freshman, and Allard (6-4, 220) and Vierra (5-9, 240) bulk up the line as returning starters. We’ll know right away how strong the Saints will be, as they host Oceanside in the opener.
