Last year: 6-5

Coach: Charles James, 1st year

League: Central

Division: IV

Key players: Kyle LeBlanc (WR), Dominic Lewis (QB), Jake Gunberg (LB), Quinn Skillin (WR-DB).

Scouting report: Under coach Eric Perry, the Centurions entered relatively unfamiliar territory last season. They notched consecutive victories over Crawford, Coronado, Christian and Clairemont, clinching University City’s second playoff berth in 15 years and the program’s first Central League title since 1988. In addition, their six wins nearly matched the eight total victories in the previous four seasons combined. Perry, however, left for another job outside the county. Enter Charles James, the Centurions’ fourth coach since 2008. The former Morse coach, who led the Tigers’ JV team to a 31-9 record and three league titles, takes over a thin roster with only four returning players — two of whom did not touch the field last season. Pretty grim, except James scoured the campus for 46 additional players and is implementing an offensive system conducive to his personnel, built around speed, deception and decision-making.
