Matadors making case for a Top 10 ranking.

Mount Miguel High garnered more than a few preseason football Top 10 votes and the way the Matadors overpowered Morse on Friday night, they might gain a few more this week.
Scoring the first 14 points of the first half and another two TDs within a minute in the fourth quarter, the hosts overpowered Morse 35-7 in the season opener.
For three quarters, it wasn’t the easy victory most expected until junior Tre Byers returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.
Still, Mount Miguel’s offense, led by Ben Lomibao, did what it needed to do, building a 14-0 advantage before the Tigers scored on the final play of the first half on a 16-yard pass from Mikale Washington to Darius Wilson.
But with the 5-foot-10, 195-pound Lomibao gaining 109 of his 147 yards before intermission, including a 45-yard TD scamper straight up the middle, the Matadors were able to control the tempo.
“My friends said I’d gain 150,” said Lomibao, smiling. “I have to give it up to the O’line, they opened the holes.”
Of his long TD, he said, “it felt like someone was grabbing my shoulder pads.”
As it turned out, he wasn’t the team’s leading scorer as Miracle Tausaga, a 235-pound short-yardage specialist, found the end zone twice from a yard out in the second half.
