Elijah Preston rushes for 159 yards in win over Otay Ranch.

— Imperial High’s Royce Freeman may well set the section career rushing record, but the way St. Augustine sophomore Elijah Preston is going, it may not last long.

Preston rushed for 159 yards, including touchdowns of 48 and 83 yards, and collected his first high school kickoff return for a touchdown Friday when he raced 90 yards in helping the Saints win their third straight, 36-7, over host Otay Ranch.

“(The career rushing record) is a goal,” said the 5-foot-5 Preston, who raced for 1,534 yards his freshman year. “The important thing is to keep improving, to keep winning.”

With the score tied 7-7 in the second quarter, Preston took the ensuing kickoff on his 10-yard line, angled toward the left sideline and tight-roped his way inside the line, staying in bounds, giving the seventh-ranked Saints (3-1) a lead they never relinquished.

“We worked just yesterday on finishing fast on kickoff returns and I thought about that during the run,” Preston said.

Preston had another 49-yard kickoff return and finished with 169 yards on kicks.

When Tyler Herburger and Francoise Sims II added second-half touchdowns, the Saints were able to pull away from the Mustangs (1-2) for their third straight victory.
