Highlanders thwart any idea of an upset by visiting Mount Miguel.

— In some circles, the Mount Miguel football team was ticketed to upset No. 4-ranked Helix on Friday night at Jim Arnaiz Field.

The Highlanders squashed the idea by scoring 35 points in the middle two quarters on their way to a 42-19 victory.

Michael Austin set the pace for Helix with two touchdown passes and one scoring run. Adrian Petty added two touchdown runs for the Highlanders (3-1).

“When we saw on one of the websites that we’d been tabbed as the underdogs, it cut pretty deep,” said Austin, Helix’s sophomore quarterback.

Lineman Jalen Wyatt established the Highlanders’ momentum when he sacked Mount Miguel quarterback Brad Moreno, also taking the ball away to give Helix possession at the 2-yard line just one minute into the game.

Two plays later, Austin scrambled into the end zone for the final yard and an early lead for Helix.

Mount Miguel countered with a big play of its own, as Dominique Able jarred the ball loose from Jalen Davis and returned it 57 yards to the Helix 23.

But the Matadors were whistled for a personal foul, which pushed the ball back to the Helix 38.

From there, the Matadors kept the ball on the ground, as Ben Lomibao carried six times for 16 yards and eventually punched the ball in from 2 yards out to tie the game 7-7.
