FALLBROOK Del Norte scored on an 8-yard Marc Gallant run with 1:16 left in the game to pull out a thrilling 35-34 win in a nonleague game at Fallbrook on Friday.
The Nighthawks (1-3) snapped their season-opening three-game skid, while the Warriors (1-2) missed a chance to top their win total from each of the last three seasons.
“It’s always nice to win,” Del Norte coach Leigh Cole said.
Gallant’s run and Grayson Farnham’s subsequent extra point gave the Nighthawks the final lead in a see-saw battle. Fallbrook had taken a six-point advantage just two minutes earlier but missed the extra point.
“That was a tough game,” Cole said. “Neither defense could stop the other team. The offense went down there when they needed to and got the ball in the end zone.”
Gallant led all rushers with 207 yards and two scores on 24 carries and Del Norte quarterback Parker Lappin completed 17 of 24 throws for 191 yards and three TDs as the Nighthawks totaled 400 yards of offense.
Most of Fallbrook’s yardage came on the ground. Led by Roberto Ramirez (121 yards on 17 carries) and Hayden Loer (23 for 117), the Warriors ran for 323 yards but threw for just 35.
Del Norte took a 28-21 lead into halftime on the strength of three second-quarter touchdown passes from Lappin and a 65-yard TD run from Gallant in the first.
