VALLEY CENTER at POWAY

Valley Center appeared overmatched last week in a 45-0 loss to Mission Hills. Poway has struggled out of the gate, losing 61-0 last week to Oceanside. Prediction: Valley Center 28, Poway 24

SAN PASQUAL at LA COSTA CANYON

San Pasqual has outscored its opponents 148-54 behind a great ground attack. La Costa Canyon scored a major upset last week, beating San Clemente 16-13. LCC is playing the game as part of a program to raise awareness in the fight against muscular dystrophy. Prediction: San Pasqual 31, La Costa Canyon 28

ESCONDIDO at VISTA

After beating Rancho Bernardo in its opener, Escondido has been outscored 144-67 by Grossmont, Eastlake and San Marcos. Vista won its first game of the season two weeks ago, beating Steele Canyon, then fell 44-9 to Torrey Pines last week. Prediction: Escondido 28, Vista 14

RANCHO BERNARDO at SAN MARCOS

RB has scored just 48 points in its three games. San Marcos has scored 139 points in its last three games — all wins. But the Knights will be without QB Will Freed, who suffered a broken jaw last week. Prediction: San Marcos 28, Rancho Bernardo 24

TORREY PINES at MT. CARMEL

Torrey Pines has won its last two games, beating Del Norte and Vista. Mt. Carmel lost a hard-fought decision to San Pasqual last week after winning its first three games. Prediction: Torrey Pines 17, Mt. Carmel 14

HELIX at RAMONA

Helix has allowed just 45 points this season. Ramona attacks on the ground behind Nathan Cherek, who has 457 yards. Prediction: Helix 24, Ramona 21

UNIVERSITY CITY at SAN DIEGO

That first victory has eluded both programs thus far. University City is knocking on the door while San Diego is searching for its first points of the season. Prediction: University City 17, San Diego 7

MISSION BAY at CLAIREMONT

The Buccaneers defense surrendered its first touchdown of the season last week — three, actually. The Chieftains are a load to tackle, rushing for at least 230 yards each of the last three weeks. Prediction: Mission Bay 24, Clairemont 14

BISHOP’S vs. CHRISTIAN

Local opponents have experienced trouble against Christian this season, allowing 108 points in two games while scoring only three. Bishop’s is just as potent, rushing for 240-plus yards in each of the four weeks. Prediction: Christian 31, Bishop’s 23

HILLTOP at CORONADO

The formula for the Lancers has been feeding a plethora of running backs, a group that has produced 10 touchdowns. The Islanders have scored plenty (106) but have allowed nearly as many points (103). Prediction: Hilltop 27, Coronado 13

WEST HILLS at EL CAPITAN

West Hills shut out Serra, limiting the Conquistadors to 59 total yards and five first downs last week. El Capitan is an offensive machine, averaging 53 points per contest. Prediction: El Capitan 24, West Hills 23

CRAWFORD vs. FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN

The double wing offense has yielded 1,389 yards, 23 touchdowns, 46.5 points per game and a perfect record for the Colts. During the Knights’ two-game skid, they have surrendered 81 points. Prediction: Crawford 34, Foothills Christian 17

ST. AUGUSTINE at EASTLAKE

Last week’s big victory against Madison proved the Titans to be one of the most complete teams in the county. Efficiency and ball security are key for the Saints, who face their second big test of the season. Prediction: Eastlake 34, St. Augustine 27
