Skyler Ray rushed for a pair of second-half touchdowns to lift host Scripps Ranch to a 17-10 victory over Point Loma on Friday.
Ray scored on a 16-yard burst up the middle midway through the third quarter to break a 3-3 tie.
The senior captain then added a tackle-breaking, 32-yard scoring run with 5:05 left in the fourth quarter to give the Falcons a 17-3 lead.
The Pointers immediately responded with a 10-play, 80-yard drive, capped by Jaylen Griffin’s 37-yard scamper.
After forcing a three-and-out, Point Loma got the ball back with 1:11 left at its own 19-yard line.
But Scripps Ranch linebacker Couri Bryant intercepted a pass with 33 seconds left to clinch the victory.
“It’s unbelievable,” said Falcons coach Joe Meyer, whose team improved to 4-1. “They played their fannies off on both sides of the ball.”
Scripps Ranch’s Tony Moreno kicked a 22-yard field goal in the first half, and Point Loma’s Jason Shoemaker answered with a 30-yarder early in the third quarter.
After holding the Falcons to 3 yards on the ensuring possession, the Pointers (3-3) appeared ready to pounce, starting their next drive on the Scripps Ranch 35.
But Bryant scooped up a fumble at the 39 and, three plays later, Falcons QB Josh Fish hit Martel Davis with a shovel pass that Davis turned into a 41-yard gain, setting up Ray’s go-ahead score.
