CHULA VISTA In the short history of the series, Olympian had never lost to Otay Ranch. After a huge second half on Friday night, the Eagles are still perfect against their Metro Mesa League rival.
Olympian (5-2, 1-0) won 37-14 at Otay Ranch (1-5, 0-1) by scoring 23 points and shutting out the Mustangs in the second half to break a 14-14 halftime tie.
The Olympian defense recovered three fumbles, grabbed two interceptions and forced two turnovers on downs.
Olympian opened the scoring when William Lampkin ran 68 yards for a touchdown on the second play from scrimmage.
But Otay used some trickery on a halfback pass to quickly tie it. In the second quarter, Otay quarterback Damien Wyzkowski connected with Quentin Bell for a 40-yard TD and a 14-7 lead.
But that was the last taste of success for the Mustangs.
Olympian’s Manny Rodriguez ran for a 70-yard touchdown just before halftime to tie the game at 14.
After intercepting Otay to open the second half, Olympian quarterback Gary Cannon hit Rodriguez for a 62-yard TD. Angel Garcia added a third-quarter field goal. In the fourth quarter, Cannon scored on a QB sneak and Lampkin had an 11-yard TD run.
Otay’s Daniel Bobier was injured in the fourth quarter and left the field in an ambulance.
