By John Maffei

Standouts from North, East, South, City.

JARED MAFFUCCI

La Costa Canyon

Senior

RB-DB | 5-10, 190

Storyline: The Mavericks had a need at running back, so Maffucci, the starting strong safety, volunteered to add offense to his résumé. Maffucci also plays lacrosse for LCC and carries a 4.6 GPA while taking five AP classes. UC Davis and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo are among his college choices. He wants to major in engineering.

Family affair: Maffucci is the grandson of John Maffucci, the longtime athletic director and coach at Army-Navy.

Key stat: Maffucci had 150 all-purpose yards last week in an upset of Carlsbad, 74 of those coming on a touchdown pass from Jake Mann.

Quotable: “He saved our butts. He’s a star in the classroom and a leader on the field,” LCC coach Sean Sovacool said.

He scored a TD rushing and receiving last week in a 21-19 win over Steele Canyon. He’s averaging 9 yards on 40 rushes and 17.8 on six receptions. The team will need him against a tough Valhalla squad.

Touchdown runs of 50 and 63 yards helped the Red Devils to a 28-27 win over Mar Vista last week. Garcia leads the team with 567 rushing yards and averages 40 yards on three pass receptions. Sweetwater hosts Mater Dei Catholic.

DIRK LACY
