Just two years after going winless in the Palomar League, Ramona completed an undefeated league season with a 14-7 win over host Westview in the teams’ Palomar League finale Friday.
“To be outright Palomar League champs is great,” Ramona coach Damon Baldwin said. “To win the championship and not share it with anyone was our goal tonight.
“Two years ago, we played with all sophomores, then last year we finished second. It’s fitting that this group of seniors went from zero wins to second place to winning the championship their senior year.”
The No. 8 Bulldogs (9-1, 4-0) can thank their defense for the win. They held the Wolverines (3-7, 1-3) to 215 yards of offense, forced two turnovers, and made two fourth-down stops. The Wolverines’ only score came after a Ramona fumble set them up deep in Bulldogs’ territory.
“The defense did a great job tonight,” Baldwin said. “Their quarterback and their scheme caused some problems with his ability to run, but we made some big plays when we had to.”
Ramona got on the board late in the first half, capping an eight-play, 74-yard drive with Justin Villagana’s 31-yard TD run with 52 seconds left before the break.
After the Wolverines tied the game on a Nate Kitteringham-to-Tyler Nelson TD pass early in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs responded by scoring on Nathan Cherek’s 17-yard TD run on their next possession.
