Dons gain measure of revenge vs. Q’s

Cathedral Catholic's playoff forfeit to Serra last year still a motivator.

Almost a year ago, Cathedral Catholic was prepping for a playoff game against Serra when the Dons discovered they had a barely used ineligible player on their roster.

Forced to forfeit, Cathedral’s season was over, and the Conquistadors advanced.

On Friday night, the Dons got back at Serra, pulling away in the fourth quarter for a 37-13 nonleague win.

Forfeiting out of the playoffs, Dons coach Sean Doyle said his troops are even more motivated this year.

“We told the seniors last year we’d try to win one for them this year,” Doyle said.

Cathedral had won 16 straight playoff games, five section titles and a state championship since its last on-field loss in the postseason in 2006. The No. 9-ranked Dons will enter the Division I playoffs this year at 8-2.

Serra (7-3) had already clinched its second consecutive City League title with last week’s 21-15 win over Morse, but the Q’s were hoping to improve their standing in Division II.

Chris Moliga led the Dons with 153 rushing yards on 28 carries, including a 7-yard TD run and a 14-yard TD catch. Drew Cowell added 102 yards and TDs on runs of 38 and 50 yards and Joshua Gizzi had 77 yards and a TD of 28 yards.

Serra got a 99-yard TD as Justin Malone-Woods got behind the secondary after a short pass from Hunter Correll, who finished 12 of 30 for 216 yards.
