EL CAJON Nobody on the Granite Hills sidelines could remember the last time the Eagles won a playoff game.
On a night when it started sprinkling and ended up pouring, the Eagles (6-5) used a fast start in the first half and then blanked visiting Bonita Vista over the last three periods in a 28-14 triumph Friday in the San Diego Section Division III playoffs. It was the Eagles' first postseason victory since 1985.
“None of us can remember the last time when Granite Hills won a playoff game,” said versatile junior receiver-slotback Michael Ladesma. “But we all feel pretty good about this one.”
Granite Hills scored on the first play of the game when quarterback Chris Meredith fired a 66-yard touchdown strike to a wide-open Ladesma.
“I faked a crack and then broke outside,” Ladesma said. “There was nobody there but me and the ball.”
Bonita Vista scored two touchdowns on a 2-yard run by Ricky Alvarez and a 1-yard run by Chris Boguille over a 3:19 stretch to take the lead.
Once again Granite Hills scored on the first play of a quarter as Seth Collins scrambled on a 41-yard run. Later in the period, Collins connected with Ladesma on a 51-yard strike after Meredith drilled a 6-yard touchdown bullet to Josh Longbrake.
“The second touchdown was a read option,” Ladesma said.
