La Jolla’s hurry-up offense sputtered briefly, but once it got going, it never stopped en route to a 63-21 victory over Mater Dei Catholic in the San Diego Section Division IV quarterfinals Friday.
No one was faster than the 5-foot-10 Vikings senior Eric Tims, who spun, shimmied and shook his way to a game-high 236 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries.
Tims ignited a 28-point second-quarter, rushing for 114 yards in the final 5:30 of the half, to help La Jolla (5-6) erase an early 14-7 deficit.
By the time the Vikings’ full-speed onslaught was over, they’d scored 42 unanswered points to put the game way.
Reid Martin rushed for 141 yards and three touchdowns, adding plenty of thunder to Tims’ lightning.
The La Jolla defense pestered Mater Dei quarterback Marco Morales all game, recording seven sacks and an interception.
The Vikes’ Justin Cook notched four of the sacks, and La Jolla forced four turnovers.
The Vikings advanced to the Division IV semifinals.
When Mater Dei’s Morales got time to throw, he was able to throw three touchdown passes, including a pair to Iman Chatman-Dixon.
Morales finished with 274 passing yards, including 109 to Evan Davis, as the Crusaders finished 4-8.
