Crusaders ranked No. 4 in the San Diego Section, and that may not be high enough.

— Mater Dei Catholic is currently ranked No. 4 in the San Diego Section, and that may not be high enough.

The Crusaders cut down No. 6 Our Lady of Peace 60-39 on Saturday to capture the girls basketball White Division championship of the Matador Classic at Mount Miguel.

The game was tied 13-13 early in the second quarter before Mater Dei pulled away to lead by as many as 23 points.

The basic difference between these two teams is depth. When Mater Dei coach David Monroe made a substitution, the Crusaders (5-1) hardly broke stride.

“I’m missing two of my starters and my sixth man for various reasons,” said Monroe.

It was difficult to notice.

Kandiss Barber had 17 points and nine rebounds, while Kristine Sellona had 16 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists for the Crusaders.

OLP (4-2) had to rely primarily on 6-foot-1 Kristen Johnson, who had 18 points and 12 rebounds.

“I tell every one of my girls that they have to be ready to be a scoring threat or I won’t put them out there,” said Monroe. “When we do that it makes us more difficult to defend.”

Sellona said it’s just a matter of execution.

“When we do like we did in this game,” she said, “we’re pretty tough to beat.”
