Under Armour Holiday Classic: Schedule

The easy part is over.

After a second straight blowout win Friday, this time a 66-22 running-clock victory over Rocklin, host La Costa Canyon runs into L.A. Windward on Saturday at 7 in the American Division semifinals of the Under Armour Holiday Classic.

“Saying it’s going to get tougher is a major understatement,” LCC coach Dave Cassaw said after his 12-1 Mavericks won by 44 after beating Gahr by 32 on Thursday.

“Windward is very impressive, very athletic. It’s going to be a major challenge. And it should be exciting.”

Windward is 9-2 after tournament wins over Foothills Christian (58-49) and L.A. Fairfax (68-58).

La Costa Canyon, ranked No. 2 in the San Diego Section, had nine players score Friday, but only Tommy McCarthy with 13 points reached double figures.

The Mavericks led 32-9 at the half and 53-18 after three quarters against Rocklin (5-4).

“We’ve had two good wins, but it would have been nice to be challenged,” McCarthy said. “One of the Windward players was on my AAU team, and I’ve seen most of their guys in the summer. They’re a good team.

“We got a chance to see both games in the tournament, so we know what to expect.”

What will that be?

“They’re athletic, but they’re tough, too,” McCarthy said. “They’ll knock you in the mouth, so we need to be ready for a physical game.”

The Mavericks didn’t need to get physical Friday. They outrebounded Rocklin 36-23.

Eric Kaplan led the way with eight rebounds with Travis Fuller and Brady Twombly grabbing seven each. Fritz Eibel finished with six.

“We’re really high on Kaplan,” Cassaw said of the junior who also had nine points. “He’s a really good defender, and he’s gaining confidence on the offensive side.”

In the National Division, Torrey Pines, which took a spot in the losers’ bracket to accommodate out-of-state teams that can only play three games in the tournament, beat Sacramento Sheldon 66-55. Sheldon is the defending champion. Torrey Pines plays at 12:40 p.m. Saturday against Faith Baptist Academy from North Carolina.

• In the American Division at La Costa Canyon, Mater Dei Catholic will play Roosevelt (Wa.) in the semifinals Saturday at 8:35 p.m. after blasting Long Beach Millikan 65-36. Earlier, Hoover edged Taft 74-73 as Damonte Holiday slipped inside off a missed free throw to score the winning basket with 4 seconds left. Holiday led all scorers with 26 points. Hoover plays Temecula Valley at 2:15 p.m. Saturday.

• In the Governors Division at Carlsbad, Poway beat Lincoln of Oregon 77-73 to advance to the 5:25 p.m. semifinal Saturday against Escondido, which beat South Gate 68-23.

• In the Mayors Division at Santa Fe Christian, Westview beat El Modena 65-52 to advance to the semifinals at 5:25 p.m. Saturday. Marcus Graves had 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists for Westview.
