As hosts for Mayors Division, Eagles on their own court for title game.

— Hosting even a portion of a basketball tournament is a lot of work, but occasionally it can have major benefits.

Santa Fe Christian was the site of the Mayors Division of the Under Armour Holiday Classic, and when the Eagles battled their way into Monday night’s championship against Bishop’s, they had a home game.

With the partisan crowd cheering them on and obvious familiarity with the court, the Eagles downed the Knights 56-44 to capture the title.

This, after spotting Bishop’s the game’s first 13 points.

“It was a big advantage playing at home because our fans are great,” said Jack Langborg, whose 18 points were the team co-leader with Brian Finley and whose 10 rebounds were tops. “They came out during the winter break to support us.”

It didn’t look like Santa Fe Christian (9-4) would win handily after Bishop’s raced out to the big lead before Langborg scored 4:16 into the game. A suddenly much more aggressive man defense ignited a 9-0 run that got the Eagles back into it.

Bombing away with six long-range 3-pointers, SFC opened its own 13-point lead at 42-29, but even then the Knights, whom they’ll see twice more in Coastal League action, stayed close, trailing by just two with a quarter to go.

Bishop’s (6-2), without a player taller than 6 feet, cooled off shooting and could count only Justin Woodley’s 3-pointer in the final eight minutes.
