Local players earn state honors

Freeman, McManus, Warner named as first-team picks by Cal-Hi Sports.


As a receiver and kicker, West Hills senior Daniel McManus scored 107 points for the Wolf Pack.

Three local high school football players have been named first-team All-State by Cal-Hi Sports.

Imperial running back Royce Freeman and West Hills receiver and kicker Daniel McManus were honored on offense, while Mission Hills linebacker Fred Warner was honored on defense.

Freeman, the San Diego Section Offensive Player of the Year, rushed for 2,824 yards and 41 touchdowns. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Tigers senior finished his career with a section-record 7,601 rushing yards. Freeman, who also was chosen by Cal-Hi Sports as the Medium Schools Player of the Year, has accepted a scholarship offer to Oregon.

McManus scored 107 points for the Wolf Pack on six touchdowns, 14 field goals in 17 attempts and 29 PATs in 30 tries. The 14 field goals were second-most in the state, and his longest was 55 yards. The 5-11, 175-pound senior put 43 of 52 kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks.

Warner, the section Defensive Player of the Year, recorded 90 tackles and 13 sacks for a Grizzlies defense that helped Mission Hills reach the State Football Championship Bowl semifinals. The 6-4, 220-pound senior has committed to BYU.

This is the 35th annual All-State team chosen by Cal-Hi Sports, which has chronicled high school athletics in the state for decades. Other local selections:

All-State second team: LB Ricky Liuchan, Mission Hills; DB Alijah Holder, Oceanside.

All-State third team: QB Anthony Lawrence, Grossmont; WR Mikah Holder, Oceanside; LB Rey Osuna, Olympian; WR-DB Thai Cottrell, Oceanside; WR-DB JaJuan Thomas, San Pasqual.

Medium Schools first team: OL Cole Habib, St. Augustine; RB Royce Freeman, Imperial.

Medium Schools second team: DB Damonte Holiday, Hoover; DB Devaughn Murray, Mount Miguel; WR-DB Isiah Hennie, San Marcos.

Small Schools first team: LB Sebastian Swift, Christian.

Juniors first team: DL Jaquille Bradford, Hoover; DB DeChaun Holiday, Mission Hills.

Juniors second team: DB Frank Buncom IV, St. Augustine.

Juniors third team: QB Brad Cagle, El Capitan; QB Kareem Coles, Madison; RB Bulla Graft, Bishop’s; LB D.J. Smith, El Capitan.

Sophomores first team: RB Elijah Preston, St. Augustine.

Sophomores second team: RB Traylon Reed, Eastlake; LB Logan Baker, Valhalla; DB Riley Reyes, Granite Hills; LB Quinn Seau, St. Augustine.
