Unbeaten Lancers rifle 29 shots at Firebirds

Seventy minutes into the match, Pacific Ridge crossed midfield for the first time.

One of the Firebirds intercepted an errant ball, scurried to the opposite end on the counterattack and approached the box ready to fire. That’s when Francis Parker’s goalkeeper and two other defenders jarred the ball loose and pushed upfield.

Opportunity spoiled — the first and only for Pacific Ridge. The Firebirds wouldn’t fire off a single shot against the No. 3-ranked Francis Parker girls soccer team Thursday night.

Blanketing the Firebirds, the Lancers eased past their Coastal South League opponent 6-0 at home to remain unbeaten (21-0-2, 10-0-1).

“Them missing Katie (O’Laughlin) up top freed us to get out of the back because we didn’t have that superstar striker to worry about,” Francis Parker coach Marc Thiebach said. “That allowed us to join the attack and overrun it.”

Opportunities came easy for Francis Parker. Using through balls, crosses and set pieces, the Lancers rifled 29 shots. Pacific Ridge keeper Adriana Carrol snatched 12 attempts, 11 flew wide or high and six found the back of the net.

Sasha Stephens initiated the scoring binge against the Firebirds (9-8-2, 5-5).
The junior Lancers forward and San Diego Section goal leader scooped a ball up over the head of Carrol in the first half and cleaned up a botched corner-kick-header attempt minutes later to collect her 36th and 37th goals this season.

In the second half, the Lancers continued their game of keep-away and added goals from Amy Brown, Erin Shives, Elisa Martinez and Tara Naficy on headers and audacious outside-the-box blasts.

“Our style of play is predicated on possession,” Thiebach said. “It’s our No. 1 priority for us. When we pass back and forth and control the ball, we don’t give up as many attempts to opposing teams.”
