The Pointers will be hanging another San Diego Section flag after Morgan MacLean erupted for 15 of her 22 points in the fourth quarter en route to a 43-36 victory over Hoover on Friday at USD’s Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Point Loma captured the Division IV title by staying close, entering the fourth quarter down by just two points, 24-22. Then coach Dave Aros implored his girls to remember what got them there — defense.
Forcing six of Hoover’s 27 turnovers in the final eight minutes, the Pointers (17-8) made the most of their opportunities, especially MacLean, who buried a 3-pointer to give her club a 25-24 lead as Point Loma never looked back.
“I don’t know where that three came from,” said the junior. “We just relaxed and did a good job in the second half. We knew if we kept them in the 30s, we’d win.”
MacLean missed her first three free throws but buried the next nine straight, including 8-for-8 in the fourth quarter.
Aros, who was an assistant on those Trepanier-coached teams, said it’s just a matter of getting on a roll.
“Once we got started there was no us holding back,” he said.
Hoover (12-12), seeking its first title, led for most of the first half behind Hope Ward, who finished with 14 points.
