Favorable roll helps young Firebirds defeat UCSD Preuss

Behind a favorable roll, No. 4 Del Lago Academy edged Preuss School 1-0, upsetting the No. 2 Tritons at Clairemont High to capture the San Diego Section Division V girls soccer finals crown Friday night.

“To win a section title in the school’s first year is something special,” said Firebirds coach Pete Christl. “I’m just so proud of these girls for buying in and working hard out there.”

Through roughly two-thirds of the match, numerous opportunities presented themselves to both teams — some via creation, some via miscues.

There were set pieces. There were counter attacks. There were one-two, touch passes, crosses and through-balls. There were clean strikes at goal. Deflections, too.

But neither Del Lago Academy nor Preuss School finished their chances.

Then, in the 57th minute, the ball tumbled at the feet of Allyson Gimber. The tipped low cross continued rolling and the freshman midfielder blasted the ball into the open net, sealing the match for the Firebirds (16-6), who upset top-seeded Crawford 1-0 in the semifinals.

“I saw the pass coming from Reanna (Barrios), I did a turn off and shot it,” Gimber said.

Freshman keeper Aubrey Cousins collected her second clean sheet of the postseason, blanketing Preuss (9-6-1).

“Instead of lining up in the 4-4-2 formation, which we typically use, we used a 3-5-2 to play against Preuss,” Christl said. “We wanted to modify our midfield to try to control the possession and the game a little bit and I think that was the difference.”
