Cathedral Catholic doesn't allow a goal in three playoff wins

There was no way Cathedral Catholic goalkeeper Hanna Macaulay and her teammates could lose on their way to a third consecutive San Diego Section girls soccer championship.

The top-seeded Dons didn’t allow a goal in three playoff games. They claimed the Division I title by topping Scripps Ranch 2-0 on second-half goals by Audrey Hegardt and Alyssa Fiddes in the final at Mesa College on Saturday.

“It’s amazing,” said Macaulay, a fourth-year varsity member, who needed to make just four saves. “There’s a lot of pressure (to win another title), but a lot of times, we play better under pressure.”

Cathedral (23-2-3) moved ahead of the No. 2 Falcons (20-3-4) five minutes into the second half when Hegardt converted on her own rebound.

“I was in kind of shock,” said Hegardt, a sophomore defender who recorded her fifth goal of the season. “Then when everyone rushed me, I realized we were winning, and that made me really happy.”

Fiddes added her goal 12 minutes later on a sliding shot.

The Dons are unbeaten in 19 straight.
