DOWNEY — Based on the number of teams going for Southern California Regional championships, there’s never been a better year for San Diego Section high school soccer teams.
A record six San Diego representatives advanced to the boys and girls regional finals at Warren High, with local teams in five of the six contests in the seventh annual event that completes a two-day run today.
“It’s just been building (in San Diego),” said Cathedral Catholic girls coach Dawn Lee, whose team is bidding for a repeat Division II title. “Every year, our teams have been getting stronger and stronger, and we’re showing that to the rest of the state, especially the Southern Section.”
The previous best was four regional final berths, resulting in two titles, in the debut year of 2008 and again in 2011.
To open the finals, the Francis Parker girls defeated Santa Monica Marymount in Division III on Friday night.
San Diego schools owned seven regional crowns to start this year, led by the Cathedral girls with two, including their first in 2008.
“Every year, we list our goals,” Lee said. “We want to win our league, the (section) and this, so there’s motivation in itself to complete that, not to mention bragging rights.”
The Dons face La Costa Canyon today in an all-San Diego showdown between two section champions. Cathedral won the Division I title, while the Mavericks took the Open Division crown.
Also vying today from San Diego are Carlsbad (Division I boys), San Diego Southwest (Division II boys) and Westview (Division I girls).
