In first trip to finals, Spartans capture San Diego Section Division IV title

It always has been more than a two-hour drive.

That’s the distance from Central’s campus in El Centro to the San Diego Section championships at UC San Diego.

That trip seemed a lot shorter Friday, at least going back to the desert, as the fifth-seeded Spartans claimed their first softball title with a 5-1 win over No. 1 Bishop’s.

What made the title even more special was the fact that it came on the Spartans’ first visit to the finals.

“This feels amazing,” Central pitcher Jalyn McClain said. “There are no words that describe this. To be the first team to do this, even better.

“There will be so many memories associated with that banner since it will be up there forever.”

Central (17-14-1) backed the four-hit pitching of McClain with a 10-hit attack, led by junior Alyssa Platero, who was 3-for-4 with an RBI, and junior Kassandra Orozco, who was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.
