Chieftains junior blanks Brawley for San Diego Section Division III title

Clairemont pitcher Sarah Crawford picked the perfect moment to throw her best game.

The junior didn’t allow a Brawley hit until the seventh inning to lead the Chieftains to a 3-0 victory over the Wildcats in the San Diego Section Division III final Saturday at UC San Diego.

“I have to admit this is the best game I ever pitched,” said Crawford, who was perfect through the first 11 batters she faced.

Crawford’s performance helped Clairemont win its first softball title in school history.

“Sara pitched virtually every pitch this season after our other pitcher got hurt,” said Chieftains coach Lori Schmersal. “She just pitched both games on Thursday night and came back so strong today.”

Her teammates scored all the runs Crawford would need in the second inning when Julian Abouserhal singled in Yasmine Jameson for a 1-0 lead.

Clairemont (22-8) brought around two more in the top of the fifth when Kate Braunsdorf drove in Amber Huffman and Samantha Klem with a single to right.

“We’ve had peaks and valleys all season, but we never gave up,” said Schmersal. “From Day 1 I knew what we were capable of, and that was winning CIF.”

Brawley (17-15) got its only hit when Hannah Rodriguez singled up the middle leading off the seventh.

“I knew I had the no-hitter,” said Crawford, “but knew I had to keep my cool.”
