After consecutive losses in finals, Lancers earn San Diego Section Open Division crown

While Bonita Vista’s disappointment will continue for another year, Carlsbad, which lost in the Division I final the last two seasons to Torrey Pines, finally has its crown, even if it is a little late in arriving.

The No. 2-seeded Lancers scored six runs in their last two at-bats for an 8-4 victory over Bonita Vista to win the inaugural Open Division crown in the San Diego Section softball playoffs Saturday at UC San Diego.

Taylor Gardner’s two-run single snapped a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning to put Carlsbad (19-4) ahead for good en route to its first section title since 2003.

“When we beat Torrey in the semis, that was a great feeling, but this is an unforgettable moment for the seniors,” Gardner said. “It’s been a difficult two years, getting close and losing. No way were we going to lose a third time.”

A four-run fifth inning, started by a pair of walks, put Carlsbad in the lead. Erika Piancastelli singled in one run and Robyn Ukegawa’s ground out tied the game, setting the stage for Gardner’s two-run single for a 6-4 lead.

After Bonita Vista scored the game’s first run on Alex Vargas’ double, the Lancers roared back with two. Amanda Domingo singled in the first run and the second came home on a fielder’s choice.

Bonita Vista retook the lead in the third with a pair of unearned runs courtesy of two Lancers errors. Alyssa Graft singled in the first score, but the go-ahead run came home on the second miscue of the inning for a 3-2 lead.

The Barons added another run in the fourth on Brittany Wyllie’s triple and a suicide squeeze.
