Highlanders score win over state's No. 10-ranked team

Helix, shown in preseason drills, scored a major win Saturday against Ventura St. Bonaventure.

Helix, the No. 1-ranked football team in San Diego, went on a time-consuming drive with junior Curtis Holmes going the final two yards as the Highlanders upset Ventura St. Bonaventure 24-20 Saturday night in the Brothers in Arms Classic at Cathedral Catholic High.

St. Bonaventure, ranked No. 10 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports, had one last chance after Holmes scored with 1:59 to play.

But USC-bound quarterback Ricky Town missed a connection on a fourth-down pass from the Helix 31 with 25 seconds to play.

Jihad Woods was outstanding on both sides of the ball for Helix, which plays Friday at 5 p.m. against Loomis Del Oro in the U-T Honor Bowl at Oceanside High.
