RANCHO BUENA VISTA at DEL NORTE (Thursday)

Rancho Buena Vista should be more competitive here after taking a beating against several Top 10 teams. Del Norte has more to play for tonight — one of the final spots in the Division II playoffs.

Prediction: Del Norte 21, RBV 14.

FALLBROOK at ORANGE GLEN (Friday)

Fallbrook is averaging 35 points a game in Valley League play. The Warriors can win the league title outright by beating Orange Glen. The Patriots have lost two straight games after six wins to open the season.

Prediction: Fallbrook 28, Orange Glen 14.

GROSSMONT at HELIX (Friday)

One of the county’s oldest rivalries also has been one of its most lopsided, with Helix winning 27 of the last 30 games between the schools. Grossmont has 75- and 63-point games to its credit this season, but it’s going against a Helix defense that has allowed just 46 points (with four shutouts) all season.

Prediction: Helix 41, Grossmont 14.

CHULA VISTA at OTAY RANCH (Friday)

Both teams are trying to escape the Metro Mesa cellar. Chula Vista has allowed 184 points during a four-game losing streak. Otay Ranch is trying to solidify a Division II playoff berth.

Prediction: Otay Ranch 36, Chula Vista 12.

KEARNY at CLAIREMONT (Friday)

Kearny is looking for its first win. A Clairemont victory would virtually wrap up a Division IV playoff berth for the Chieftains.

Prediction: Clairemont 14, Kearny 7.

IMPERIAL at CALEXICO (Friday)

How’s this for balance: Imperial has passed for 1,447 yards and rushed for 1,430 yards. Calexico has been shut out in three of its last four games.

Prediction: Imperial 24, Calexico 10.

MISSION BAY at POINT LOMA (Friday)

Mission Bay RB Derrick Clark needs 93 more yards to reach 1,000 for the season. Point Loma, which is averaging 32 points a game, needs a victory to remain in the mix for an Open Division playoff spot.

Prediction: Point Loma 30, Mission Bay 14.

Last week: 6-1. Season: 49-14.

+++++ JOHN MAFFEI'S PICKS +++++

STEELE CANYON at VALHALLA (Friday)

Steele Canyon has lost two of its last three games. Valhalla is fighting to earn a home game in the Division I playoffs.

Prediction: Steele Canyon 31, Valhalla 24.

MADISON at LA JOLLA (Friday)

Madison has won five in a row after losing its first three games. QB Kareem Coles has accounted for 1,565 yards (1,123 passing). La Jolla QB Collin Rugg is averaging 319.5 yards through the air. WR Brandon Bonham has 49 catches for 985 yards.

Prediction: Madison 34, La Jolla 24.

RAMONA at RANCHO BERNARDO (Thursday)

A win would clinch the Palomar League title for No. 7 Ramona. The Bulldogs have won three in a row, outscoring opponents 142-27. Rancho Bernardo is in position to win a league title after back-to-back 1-9 and 1-10 seasons. But RB Tyree Range, who is averaging 142.5 yards a game, is hurt and will miss tonight’s game.

Prediction: Ramona 28, Rancho Bernardo 21.

SCRIPPS RANCH vs. ST. AUGUSTINE (Friday)

A win or loss will determine where the Saints fall in the playoffs — Open Division or Division I. Scripps Ranch is a Division II bubble team after losing to Lincoln last week.

Prediction: St. Augustine 27, Scripps Ranch 14.

CASTLE PARK at SAN YSIDRO (Friday)

Castle Park needs a win to set up a Metro Pacific League title showdown with Montgomery next week. QB Jordan Danielson leads the Trojans with 1,453 total yards. San Ysidro has lost two in a row by a count of 84-21. The Cougars have allowed 229 points this season.

Prediction: Castle Park 35, San Ysidro 21.

HILLTOP at MATER DEI CATHOLIC (Friday)

Mater Dei needs a win to set up a Metro South Bay League title showdown with Sweetwater next week. Hilltop has lost three in a row by a 167-29 count. The Lancers are playing without injured QB Daniel Sanchez.

Prediction: Mater Dei 35, Hilltop 21.

MISSION HILLS at VISTA (Friday)

Mission Hills needs to win to set up a first-place Avocado East League showdown with crosstown rival San Marcos next week. Vista has scored only 138 points this season while allowing 106.

Prediction: Mission Hills 41, Vista 24.

Last week: 6-1. Season: 49-14.
