S.D.-L.A. Challenge offers teams chance to take inventory

Lincoln coach Jeff Harper-Harris will guide his basketball team against Lynwood in the S.D.-L.A. Challenge.

The holiday tournaments are over and league games are right around the corner.

But for die-hard high school boys basketball fans, there are plenty of showcase games — locally and nationally.

The showcase season tips off Saturday with the S.D.-L.A. Challenge at Lincoln High.

The six-game event starts at 1:45 p.m. with Sweetwater vs. Venice and wraps up with Lincoln vs. Lynwood at 9:15 p.m.

“We’ve played well at times,” Lincoln coach Jeff Harper-Harris said after the Hornets suffered a 37-29 loss to Scripps Ranch on Tuesday.

“Alex Dumas and Moli Mojus have played well. Malik Parsons has been our early-season MVP. And point guard Elijah Johnson has done a good job.

“Our biggest kid is 6-foot-4, so we have to defend, we have to hit shots and we have to play with intensity to win.

“We didn’t do that against Scripps Ranch and got beat by a fundamentally sound team. But I’m happy with our start, and I want to represent San Diego the best we can.”

Before playing Lynwood (9-4), Lincoln (9-3) hosts St. Augustine tonight at 7:30 in a Western League game.

Former Lincoln coach Jason Bryant, currently coaching at Patrick Henry, serves as organizer of the S.D.-L.A. Challenge.

“We have some really good games, but that last one — Lincoln-Lynwood — should be very good,” Bryant said.

“Lincoln has a great new facility. There is definitely a sense of area pride for the teams. So the fans should see some really good basketball.”

At 3:15 p.m., Horizon (3-8) meets Pasadena La Salle (9-5).

La Jolla Country Day (15-0), ranked No. 5 in San Diego, plays Woodland Hills El Camino Real (5-8) at 4:30 p.m.

“I’m interested to see Country Day,” Bryant said. “They have a really nice blend of veteran players and talented freshmen.”

Led by ninth-grader Ryan Langborg, who averages 15.3 points, and senior Bruce Edwards, who averages 14.5, LJCD won the Mayors Division of the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic.

Morse (8-4), led by Cal State Bakersfield signee Justin Davis, plays L.A. Dorsey (12-6) at 6 p.m. Dorsey is led by Lafayette Dorsey, who is averaging 17.1 points a game.

Mission Bay (9-4) plays L.A. Price (8-8) at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets for the event at Lincoln are $10 and are good for all day.

Elsewhere on Saturday:

Mt. Carmel, Rancho Bernardo, Orange Glen and Escondido play in the Temecula Valley Showcase. Escondido (7-6) is led by 6-foot-10 Keegan Cummins and plays Great Oak (8-6) at 5:45 p.m.

Sierra Canyon High hosts the five-game Super Showcase, featuring Foothills Christian and St. Augustine — the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in San Diego.

Foothills (9-2) plays Chino Hills (13-0), a team ranked No. 1 in California by MaxPreps and No. 1 in the nation by USA Today, at 6:45 p.m.

Those teams played earlier in the season with Chino Hills winning 106-86.

St. Augustine (11-2) plays Mission Hills Alemany (10-5) at 3:30 p.m.

Among the highlights on the Martin Luther King holiday weekend:

Horizon is the site of the six-game MLK Showcase on Jan. 16. San Ysidro (12-2) and Morse are the standout teams. San Ysidro plays El Centro Central (9-5) at 4:30 p.m. Morse plays Horizon at 7:30 p.m.

Across the country on Jan. 16, Foothills Christian plays Sacred Heart of Connecticut at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. Sacred Heart is ranked No. 21 in the nation by USA Today. The Hearts (5-0) have won 37 games in a row and are led by 6-8 small forward Tyrn Flowers, who is ranked among the best players in New England.

Later in the month:

Montgomery High is the site for the Jan. 23 Coaches vs. Cancer event, which features eight games, starting at 9 a.m. Proceeds go to the V Foundation for cancer research. The feature game figures to be at 8:20 p.m. with Vista vs. Morse.

On Jan. 30, San Ysidro hosts the five-game City of Angels Showcase. The final two games — San Ysidro vs. Hoover and La Jolla Country Day vs. West Hills — figure to be the best. Proceeds from this event go to orphanages in Tijuana.
