Kyle Moses scores touchdowns in variety of ways in win over El Capitan

— Holy Moses, this kid can play!

Kyle Moses scored three different ways — impressive every one — to lead visiting Mater Dei to a 41-14 victory over El Capitan on Friday night in a nonleague contest.

Heavily recruited by Holy Cross (which shares a nickname with Mater Dei), Moses scored on a 9-yard reception, a 55-yard interception return and a 79-yard kickoff return as the Crusaders (2-0) cruised past the Vaqueros.

“The kid’s special,” Mater Dei coach John Joyner said. “Holy Cross is getting a pretty amazing player.”

Moses finished with five catches for 88 yards.

Chris Jones was equally stellar, completing 14 of 19 for 202 yards and two touchdowns. All-Section running back CJ Vardell, who has committed to Oregon, had 16 carries for 113 yards, including TDs of 22 and 62 yards.

Mater Dei, a Division IV state champion, had to forfeit its win over El Capitan last year because of an ineligible player, spoiling an otherwise perfect season.

On its second possession, Mater Dei went up 6-0 on a well-designed 9-yard slant pass from Jones to Moses.

Vardell made it 13-0 early in the second quarter with a 22-yard touchdown run up the middle — the score being set up by a nifty 24-yard reception by Vardell.

On the other side of the ball, Moses picked off a pass and raced untouched 55 yards for a TD and a 19-0 lead. Just before halftime, Quentin Frazier made a terrific move to get wide open for a 20-yard TD pass from Jones.

Vardell opened the third quarter with a 62-yard TD run to give Mater Dei a 32-0 lead. Mater Dei finished with 358 total yards.

For El Capitan (0-1), Steven Hosaka caught a 26-yard TD pass from Phoenix Cates, and Connor Roosa added a 16-yard TD run.
