The Mira Mesa High football team converted a big decision into a huge victory Friday night.

The Marauders scored a touchdown on their first possession of overtime and successfully went for two points, which proved to be the difference in a 29-27 road win against Mt. Carmel.

When the Sundevils followed with a score of the own on their first series of the extra session, the game was decided on Mt. Carmel’s ensuing two-poimt try. Quarterback Sean Casey, who had just thrown a 25-yard scoring pass to Grant Walby, was stuffed by Mira Mesa defenders Noel Sanchez and Malachi Vanta on the conversion attempt to preserve the Marauders’ third victory of the season is as many games.

“We just didn’t want to lose this game after all the hard work we put in,” said Mira Mesa junior quarterback Noah Tumblin, who scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 1-yard run in overtime before handing off to Artyom Harr for the winning two-point conversion run.

“Our crowd kept cheering and kept us motivated," added Tumblin, who threw three touchdown passes in regulation, including two to Albert Lemon, covering 17 and 3 yards, and a 58-yarder to Harr.

“It was a big call to make," Marauders coach Gary Blevins said of the decision to go for two after scoring first in overtime. “We could kick field goals all night, but we figured we could put them at a disadvantage if we make it.”

Mira Mesa has already tripled its win output of a season ago, when the Marauders went 1-9.

“We have a great group of young kids this year with only seven seniors,” said Blevins. “And that’s nice after the down year we had last season.”

By dropping its home opener, Mt. Carmel (0-3) suffered its third straight loss to start the season after opening the 2016 campaign with four straight wins. The Sundevils begin Palomar League play next week at home against Vista.
