Oceanside ready to start another championship streak

MUST-SEE LIST

Offense: Carlsbad RB Shawn Cameron, who gained 1,232 yards last season, offers breakaway ability with an eye for the end zone.

Defense: La Costa Canyon lineman Scott Quessenberry gears up to follow brothers Paul (Navy) and David (San Jose State) in college football.

Game: Oceanside at La Costa Canyon, Oct. 26, 7 p.m.

OCEANSIDE

Last year: 9-3-1

Coach: John Carroll, 24th year

Key players: Twain Bernard (LB-SB), Thai Cottrell (DB-SB), Eddie Gonzalez (P), William Gulley (RB-LB), Alijah Holder (DB), Ryshaud Keegan (RB), Tofi Paopao (QB), Teo Paulo (LB-OL), CJ Tauala (OL-DL), Jayce Whittaker (DB-SB).

Scouting report: The Pirates look to regain the section Division II championship after their seven-year reign ended in the finals last season. Guiding the aerial attack is Paopao, who has earned all-league honors the last two years. Keegan keys a solid ground game. Gulley anchors the defense at LB.

LA COSTA CANYON

Last year: 9-3

Coach: Sean Sovacool, 3rd year

Key players: Adam Allmaras (K-P), Shayne Davern (LB-FB), Deon Dickey (RB), Jake Mann (QB-WR-DB), Noah May (DB-RB), Kyle Mummua (DB), Scott Quessenberry (OL-DL), Jake Sesti (QB), Quinn Smith (OL-DL), Ty Toolson (LB).

Scouting report: The Mavericks, who reached the Division II semifinals last year, count on Quessenberry to anchor both lines. Dickey shines at RB and kick returner, while Sesti returns to spark the air attack. The defense relies on Mummua with a boost from Davern, injured last season.

CARLSBAD

Last year: 7-5

Coach: Thadd MacNeal, 2nd year

Key players: Shawn Cameron (RB), Christian Chapman (QB), Aaryn Dorsett (RB), Evan Gaspari (WR-DB), Langdon Lapp (DB), Leo Marin (LB-TE), Noah McGinley (LB-FB), Jordan Perez (DB-WR), Mike Shuffer (OL-DL), Rafael Sangines (OL-DL).

Scouting report: The Lancers are on the upswing, bolstered by a strong junior class, including Chapman, who fared well in limited QB duty last season. Cameron keys the ground game, and Perez ranks as a top receiving threat. The linebacking corps anchors the defense, led by Marin and McGinley.

VISTA

Last year: 7-6

Coach: Dan Williams, 9th year

Key players: Jacob Bedford (RB-DB), Jerome Jerry (TE-DB), Davin Lemon-Rodriguez (QB), Chad Richardson (RB-DB), Anthony Pabloff (QB), Matt Reschke (OL-DL), Fabian Santa Cruz (RB-LB), Sia Satele (OL-DL), Christian Williams (OL-DL), Todd Williams (RB-LB).

Scouting report: With a move to the Avo West, the Panthers augment a strong league as a returning Division I finalist. Bedford heads the ground game with all-league honors last season, while Pabloff looks to become the starting QB as a senior. The defense counts on Richardson in the secondary.

EL CAMINO

Last year: 4-7

Coach: Pulu Poumele, 4th year

Key players: Chris Beauchamp (QB), Cory Bogras (WR), Joe Coleman (DB), Payton Duplaisir (OL-DL), Kenny Kish (QB), Austin Ogle (OL-DL), Micah Sua (FB-DL) Tristin Wilson (OL-DL) Noah Taele (OL-DL), Justin Williams (RB-LB).

Scouting report: All-league choice Williams heads the ground game along with Sua, a sizable force at fullback. The Wildcats could turn to either Kish or Beauchamp at QB for senior leadership behind a line anchored by Duplaisir and Newman. Ogle and Wilson hold forth on the defensive line.
